Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)

The announcement was made on Monday at the Government House in Gusau by the Deputy Governor, Mani Mummuni, who spoke on behalf of the governor.

Mummuni explained that the decision followed wide consultations with political leaders and stakeholders across the state.

He noted that the move was endorsed during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Rescue Hall inside the Government House, Gusau, after the governor engaged party leaders and key actors to review the prevailing political situation in the state.

According to the deputy governor, the decision to join the APC was influenced by the lingering internal crisis within the PDP and the need to work with a broader political platform to tackle security challenges and accelerate development in Zamfara.

He added that stakeholders advised the governor to align with the ruling party’s “Renewed Hope” agenda in order to attract greater support for the state and strengthen governance efforts.

Mummuni also called on supporters and political allies across Zamfara to register with the APC as the party begins its electronic membership registration drive aimed at expanding its membership in the state.

He maintained that the governor’s move is intended to promote unity, stability, and faster development for the people of Zamfara.

Lawal’s defection comes after weeks of speculation about his political future, particularly following the recent judgment of the Court of Appeal concerning the PDP convention in Ibadan, Oyo State.
