Super Falcons Miss 2027 Women’s World Cup After South Africa Defeat

From Paul Orude Bauchi
Nigeria’s Super Falcons will miss the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after losing 2-1 to South Africa in a decisive qualifying play-off in Casablanca, Morocco.
The defeat ends Nigeria’s unbroken run of appearances at the Women’s World Cup since the competition was first held in 1991.
The Falcons needed to beat Banyana Banyana to progress to the intercontinental play-offs and keep their hopes of reaching the tournament alive. After a goalless first half, however, South Africa took charge in the second period.
Banyana Banyana broke the deadlock in the 56th minute before doubling their lead in the 77th minute, leaving Nigeria with a difficult task.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade reduced the deficit from the penalty spot in the third minute of added time. The penalty came after a South African player was shown a red card for a handball, forcing the hosts to finish with 10 players.
Nigeria pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but South Africa successfully defended their advantage until the final whistle.
The result represents a significant setback for the ten-time African champions and brings an end to their historic presence at every edition of the Women’s World Cup.
The Falcons will now have to regroup and address the weaknesses exposed during the qualification campaign as they prepare for their next international assignments.
