Supreme Court Nullifies PDP Convention, Deepens Party Leadership Crisis

Our Editor
The Supreme Court on Thursday nullified the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held in Ibadan, Oyo State, dealing a fresh blow to the main opposition party and deepening its lingering leadership crisis.
The apex court, in a majority judgment, held that the convention conducted on November 15 and 16, 2025, was invalid, having been held in defiance of a subsisting order of the Federal High Court.
The convention had produced executives aligned to a faction within the party, led by former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki.
With the ruling, the court effectively set aside the outcome of the convention and affirmed that actions taken in violation of valid court orders could not stand.
The judgment is seen as a significant setback for the Turaki-led faction and may strengthen the rival leadership bloc currently recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The PDP has been embroiled in internal disputes over its national leadership structure, with rival factions laying claim to the party’s control ahead of preparations for future elections.
Political observers say the latest verdict may force party stakeholders back to the negotiation table in a bid to resolve the crisis and reposition the party as a credible opposition platform.
As of the time of filing this report, the PDP leadership had yet to issue an official reaction to the judgment.
