The Founder of Mafita Women and Youth Development Initiative (MAWOYDI) Mrs. Theresa Orude, has called for increased empowerment programmes for women across Nigeria, saying that investing in women is key to national development.
Orude made the call in a message to commemorate the 2026 edition of International Women’s Day, celebrated globally every March 8.
In the statement, she applauded the resilience, strength and determination of Nigerian women, noting that this year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” highlights the importance of supporting women to achieve sustainable development.
“Today, on International Women’s Day 2026, I celebrate the strength, resilience and determination of Nigerian women. The theme ‘Give to Gain’ reminds us that when society invests in women, the entire nation benefits,” she said.
She noted that women across the country continue to make significant contributions to their families, communities and national growth despite facing numerous challenges.
Orude, however, expressed concern over the plight of women affected by insecurity and displacement, particularly in the North-East, stressing that their safety and dignity must remain a priority.
“We must not forget our sisters who still face hardship, especially women affected by insecurity and displacement in parts of the North-East. Their safety, dignity and wellbeing must remain a national priority,” she added.
The founder also called on the Federal Government, development partners and the private sector to expand empowerment programmes aimed at improving women’s access to education, skills training, finance and protection of their rights.
According to her, empowering women will not only improve the wellbeing of families but also strengthen communities and accelerate national development.
She reaffirmed the commitment of the organisation to supporting women and girls to reach their full potential.
“At Mafita Women and Development Youth Initiative, we remain committed to supporting women and girls to reach their full potential. Let us continue to give support, opportunities and hope—because when we give to women, we truly gain as a nation,” Orude stated.
She also congratulated Nigerian women on the occasion of International Women’s Day and encouraged them to continue playing active roles in nation-building.
