Less than two years to the 2027 general elections in Nigeria, the tenure of many state governors, including Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, who is completing his second consecutive term in office, will come to an end.

Already, political gladiators, commentators, activists, and opportunists have begun early maneuvers, strategizing, aligning, and realigning for the battle ahead. While some are carefully calculating their moves, others appear to be following the political wind without critical thought, much like what was witnessed during the 2015 “broom revolution” that brought General Muhammadu Buhari to power ,  a development that produced both beneficiaries and disillusioned followers.

Below is a brief analysis of some key political figures who may seek to succeed Governor Bala Mohammed in 2027.

Professor Muhammad Ali Pate

Pate is a strong contender

Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, the Honourable Minister of Health, is a globally respected technocrat and an incorruptible politician. A serial gubernatorial aspirant under various political parties, his failure to secure the mandate in previous contests has often been attributed to his principled refusal to bribe delegates.

His impressive record as Minister of Health, particularly in securing thousands of permanent and pensionable appointments for young Nigerians, has endeared him to many. His transformational achievements in the health sector and his reputation for integrity make him a strong contender. If he secures the APC ticket, opposition parties may face a tough challenge.

Senator Shehu Buba

Sen Buba’s influence is spreading beyond Bauchi South as he eyes the governorship seat

Senator Shehu Buba represents Bauchi South Senatorial District. He previously served as caretaker chairman of Toro Local Government before his election to the Senate in 2023. He commands a solid grassroots following within the APC.

However, analysts believe it may be premature for him to seek the governorship due to limited political experience and exposure. His open confrontation with Governor Bala Mohammed has earned him both admiration and criticism. While some view him as courageous, others consider him overly ambitious. His earlier political rise was aided by the governor, who appointed him as caretaker chairman, a tenure that ended without much success.

Former Governor M.A. Abubakar

M.A Abubakar who narrowly lost to incumbent in 2019 wants to come back

Former Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar, who lost his re-election bid to Governor Bala Mohammed in 2019, is known for his sincerity of purpose and generosity. His previous record in office could work in his favor if he secures the APC ticket.

However, his weakened political structure, long absence from the grassroots, and the defection or betrayal of several former allies may hinder his comeback. Nevertheless, his connections and experience could help him reassert his political relevance.

Honourable Faruk Mustapha

Mustapha, current commissioner for Rural Development is in the governorship race

A former member of the House of Representatives and currently the Commissioner for Rural Development, Faruk Mustapha was the Director General of Governor Bala Mohammed’s 2023 re-election campaign after defecting from the APC to the PDP.

Although once popular at the grassroots, his influence has waned, and his relationship with the people has reportedly deteriorated. His political prospects may depend on rebuilding lost trust and reconnecting with his base.

Air Marshal Sadique Baba Abubakar (Rtd.)

The retired Air Marshal Abubakar who lost in the 2023 guber election is set to come back in 2027

Air Marshal Sadique Baba Abubakar (Rtd.) is Nigeria’s longest-serving Chief of Air Staff, having served for over five years before being appointed Ambassador by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He contested the 2023 Bauchi governorship election under the APC and came close to victory before losing to Governor Bala Mohammed. Known for his discipline, humility, and integrity, Sadique Abubakar remains one of the most respected personalities in Bauchi politics.

Despite betrayal by some close associates during the last election, his steadfastness and popularity may propel him to contest again, possibly under the ADC platform. His achievements in the Nigerian Air Force and his commitment to good governance make him a formidable contender.

Senator Halliru Jika

Jika who is not new in the race is a strong contender

Senator Halliru Jika is considered one of Bauchi’s luckiest politicians. His political career spans the Bauchi State House of Assembly, where he served as Speaker, to the House of Representatives, and later, the Senate.

In 2023, he contested for governor under the NNPP but performed poorly. Critics argue that he needs to adjust his political style and reassess his alliances. Nevertheless, his generosity and popularity among delegates could still work in his favor. He is currently affiliated with Atiku’s ADC.

Dr. Yakubu Adamu

Dr. Adamu, a banker-turned-politician, who currently serves as Commissioner of Finance is much in the race

Dr. Yakubu Adamu, a banker-turned-politician, currently serves as Commissioner of Finance in Bauchi State. Although intelligent and hardworking, he is relatively new to the political scene. Many observers believe he lacks the political experience and public connection required to lead a complex state like Bauchi.

Some analysts speculate that his closeness to the governor’s family, especially the governor’s son, may position him as a potential successor within the PDP, though his acceptability among party members and the electorate remains doubtful.

Nura Manu Soro

Nura Manu Soro, scion of the wealthy Soro family is eying Governor Bala Mohammed’s seat come 2027

Nura Manu Soro, a businessman-turned-politician, briefly served as Commissioner of Finance under Governor Bala Mohammed before resigning for undisclosed reasons. He contested the 2023 APC governorship primary but lost to Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.

Through his philanthropic foundation, he supports several communities in Bauchi. However, his frequent absence from the state and limited direct contact with the grassroots may hinder his chances.

Dr. Bala Maijama’a Wunti

Wunti is also a strong contender in the race to succeed Governor Bala Mohammed

Dr. Bala Maijama’a Wunti, a retired civil servant, has not officially declared his interest, but political observers believe he is working behind the scenes to contest under the APC.

Known for his philanthropy, particularly through the Wunti Alkhair Foundation, and his sponsorship of major mosque projects for Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi and the Izala sect, Bala Wunti enjoys strong support from religious circles. However, his limited political network across the 20 LGAs of the state may be a challenge. His wealth and charitable works could, however, help him overcome this barrier.

Hon. Maitama Tuggar

Tuggar is one of the heavy weights in the race to be next governor of Bauchi State

Hon. Maitama Tuggar, the current Minister of Foreign Affairs, has a long history in politics. A former member of the House of Representatives and ex-Ambassador to Germany, he previously contested for the governorship but lost to M.A. Abubakar during the APC primaries.

Though not as popular as some others, his open criticism of Governor Bala Mohammed has earned him support from the governor’s critics. However, internal party politics and limited grassroots reach may affect his chances.

Usman Adamu Sufi

Usman Adamu Sufi, is also amassing massive support in the race to succeed Bauchi State governor

Usman Adamu Sufi, an accountant with Julius Berger, is a founding member of the NNPP who later joined the APC and subsequently the PDP. He is believed to be interested in contesting the governorship, though many see him as a political lightweight.

He has modest support in Bauchi North and is known for his activism. Some observers, however, believe he may settle for a lesser political position.

Conclusion

Whoever emerges as the next governor of Bauchi State will inherit enormous responsibilities. The task ahead requires visionary leadership, inclusivity, and commitment to the founding ideals of unity and development. Political parties will come and go, but Bauchi State will remain.

May the eventual winner serve with fairness, justice, and dedication to the people.
