Bauchi Government Launches Statewide Desilting Drive to Prevent Flooding

From Paul Orude Bauchi
In a proactive move to mitigate the impact of flooding during the rainy season, the Bauchi State Government has commenced a large-scale desilting campaign across all 20 local government areas of the state.
The initiative follows early flood warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) and involves the clearing of drainages, culverts, and major waterways to enhance water flow and reduce the risk of flood-related disasters.
The campaign was formally launched in the state capital, where government officials, environmental workers, and local residents participated in the initial phase of the exercise.
Speaking during the flag-off, the Commissioner for Housing and Environment, Hon. Danlami Ahmed Kawule, emphasized that the exercise was in line with Governor Bala Mohammed’s directive to implement early preventive measures rather than wait for emergencies to occur.
“We are taking deliberate steps to ensure our communities are safe from the dangers of flooding,” Kawule stated.
“This effort is not just about government work—it requires the active support of all residents to keep our environment clean and free from blocked drainages”
He also appealed to the public to desist from indiscriminate dumping of waste, which contributes significantly to blocked waterways and flooding.
Also speaking, the State Coordinator of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL), Dr. Kabir Ibrahim, highlighted the importance of sustained desilting efforts. He noted that due to recurring runoff waste and poor drainage systems, especially in high-density areas, continuous maintenance is essential to prevent flooding.
“This is not a one-off activity. Desilting must be consistent, especially in vulnerable communities where poor waste disposal habits and urban development patterns worsen the situation,” Dr. Kabir explained.
The desilting campaign is expected to cover all flood-prone areas in the state, and will be followed by public sensitization on environmental hygiene and flood preparedness.
