Troops of the Nigerian military have killed 48 suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters while repelling coordinated attacks on military positions in Borno and Yobe states.
The attacks, which occurred between October 29 and the early hours of October 30, targeted troops in Bitta, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, and the North East Theatre Training School (NETTS), Buni Yadi, in Gujba LGA of Yobe State.
However, the military also suffered casualties, with one soldier killed during the engagements and two others sustaining minor injuries.
The development was announced on Friday in a statement issued by Captain Mohammed Goni, Acting Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force, North East, Operation HADIN KAI.
According to the statement, troops successfully repelled an attempted terrorist attack on their position in Bitta on the night of October 29, following a coordinated response involving ground forces and air support.
In a separate encounter, military personnel launched a counter-offensive against a large group of ISWAP fighters who attacked the NETTS facility in Buni Yadi.
The statement said the confrontation lasted approximately five hours, with the Theatre Command coordinating the operation through intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities, supported by air and ground forces.
The military said 48 terrorists were killed during the counter-operation, while troops recovered a significant quantity of weapons and ammunition.
Items recovered included 42 AK-47 rifles, five PKT machine guns, four general-purpose machine guns, one 60mm mortar, 105 AK-47 magazines and two video cameras.
The recovered ammunition comprised 30 rounds of 12.7mm armour-piercing incendiary ammunition, 2,738 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 223 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition and 2,054 rounds of PKT ammunition.
The statement confirmed the death of one soldier during the operations, while the two injured personnel were receiving medical attention.
It added that troops remained in high spirits and were continuing operations to prevent terrorist groups from operating freely across the North-East.
The military described the successful defence of the two locations and the recovery of weapons as a major setback for the insurgents, reaffirming its determination to sustain pressure on terrorist groups in the region.
