As PDP Internal Wranglings Persist, Gov. Bala Set to Cross Over to ADC

By Umar Usman Duguri
Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, has hinted at an imminent political realignment as he considers a move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), following the protracted crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Barring any last-minute changes after a final strategic meeting, the governor is said to be weighing his options for political survival, especially amid growing tensions within the PDP that appear to be working against his camp.
The situation has been further complicated by a recent parallel convention allegedly organized by party members aligned with the interests of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
This development follows a closed-door meeting held at the Presidential Lodge in Bauchi, where Governor Mohammed received a high-powered ADC delegation led by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Engr. Babachir David Lawal.
Speaking after the meeting, Governor Mohammed stated that reconciliation efforts within the PDP at both national and state levels have failed to yield tangible results, prompting fresh considerations about the future political direction of his camp.
The governor revealed that strategic committees have been set up in Abuja and Bauchi to thoroughly assess available political options, including possible alignment with alternative platforms.
According to him, remaining in a political environment where his bloc feels sidelined is no longer sustainable, hence the need for urgent repositioning within a viable and forward-looking opposition structure.
While describing the ADC as a “strong and attractive option,” Senator Mohammed confirmed that consultations are still ongoing, assuring that any eventual decision would be guided by broad stakeholder engagement and careful deliberation.
Earlier, Engr. Babachir David Lawal disclosed that the visit was mandated by the ADC National Chairman to formally engage Governor Mohammed and explore the possibility of his defection ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Lawal commended the governor’s political courage and influence, noting that his defection would significantly boost the ADC’s national prospects. He also stressed the need for opposition unity, warning that fragmentation within the ranks could undermine democratic stability and national progress.
Meanwhile, reliable sources confirmed that discussions on securing a more viable political platform have intensified over the weekend, with key stakeholders, including members of the National Assembly and aspiring politicians, in attendance.
In his remarks, the Bauchi State PDP Chairman, Pharmacist Samaila Burga, described the meeting as timely, noting that it would help prepare loyal party members and assure continued support within the PDP family in the state.
In a separate reaction, a member of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Hon. Babayo Mohammed Akuyam, pledged his loyalty to the governor, stating that he would support any decision taken in the interest of the state.
Political analysts believe that the timing may be right for Governor Bala Mohammed to leave the PDP, considering his political strength and outspoken stance on national issues.
They argue that an early move to the ADC could position him as the first serving governor to defect to the party, potentially reshaping the opposition landscape ahead of 2027.
