ANALYSIS: ADC Emerges Political Battleground as Kwankwaso Switches Camp Ahead of 2027

The movement of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), where the party secured over one million votes in the 2023 presidential election and a governorship seat to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) can be seen as one of the most significant political events as Nigeria moves toward the 2027 general elections.

The former Governor of Kano State, who defected from the NNPP to the ADC to join other heavyweights, has directed his supporters to align with the ADC, a move expected to bring a visible presence of his loyal base—popularly known for their red caps—into the party’s campaigns and rallies nationwide.

This development has generated widespread interest across the country, particularly regarding who will emerge as the ADC’s presidential candidate to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which is widely expected to field Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The situation has become even more intriguing with the reported defection of Peter Obi from the Labour Party to the ADC, creating what many observers describe as a formidable opposition bloc, especially as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) continues to grapple with internal crises.

Attention is now firmly on the ADC as Nigerians speculate on who will secure the party’s presidential ticket. Key names being mentioned include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Adding to the debate, former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, has cautioned that denying Peter Obi the party’s presidential ticket could prove costly, warning it may undermine the party’s chances in the election.

The influx of political heavyweights into the ADC has raised critical questions about the party’s direction, with some analysts already speculating about a possible Obi–Kwankwaso joint ticket.

Whichever path the party takes, political observers agree that any miscalculation could either become a defining strategic masterstroke or a historic setback, as the ADC positions itself as a major challenger to President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
