CAN Urges Caution Over Terrorism Financing Allegations Against Gov. Bala Mohammed.

The Bauchi State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called for caution in the ongoing prosecution of some Bauchi State Government officials by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

CAN calls for caution particularly as it relates to allegations of terrorism financing leveled against Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed.

The warning was contained in statement jointly signed by the CAN Chairman, Rev. Dr. Abraham Damina Dimeus, and the Secretary, Rev. Matthew Wakili Laslimbo, made available to journalists in Bauchi on Thursday.

The Christian body said it had closely followed developments surrounding the allegations against the governor.

CAN noted that, as a religious body with no political affiliation, it would ordinarily refrain from commenting on such matters.

However, it explained that as citizens of Nigeria and residents of Bauchi State, it considered it necessary to speak based on what it described as facts on ground.

While stressing that it was not challenging the authority or constitutional responsibilities of any agency, CAN maintained that caution was required in handling the matter to avoid worsening the situation.

According to the association, Bauchi State has enjoyed relative peace and stability since Governor Bala Mohammed assumed office in 2019, with people coexisting peacefully across religious and ethnic lines and no record of religious crises.

CAN expressed surprise over the allegation that the governor was involved in financing terrorism, describing the claims as baseless, malicious and damaging to the image of Bauchi State, which it said remains one of the most peaceful states in Northern Nigeria despite widespread insecurity in other parts of the country.

The association further highlighted Governor Mohammed’s commitment to interfaith harmony, his support for Christian institutions and activities, respect for human rights, and dedication to peace and security in the state..

CAN alleged that the claims were politically motivated, describing them as a form of political persecution and an orchestrated attempt by perceived enemies of Bauchi State to destabilize the state for personal or political gain.

It also described the allegations as a political vendetta allegedly championed by individuals outside the state, in collaboration with what it termed fraudulent elements within, aimed at tarnishing the image of both the state and the governor.

As a body committed to unity and peaceful coexistence, CAN strongly condemned the allegations and warned against any attempt capable of disrupting the peace currently enjoyed in Bauchi State.

The association reiterated its confidence in Governor Bala Mohammed, describing him as a leader of integrity who is detribalized and religiously tolerant, and acknowledged his efforts in promoting unity and development across the state.

CAN urged the public to disregard what it called false claims and to continue supporting the governor as he carries out his responsibilities.

It further stated that Christians in Bauchi State feel protected under the current administration, describing Governor Bala Mohammed as the most Christian-friendly governor the state has had since 2019.

The association called on those it accused of engaging in “dirty politics” to desist and instead prioritize the unity, peace and progress of Bauchi State.

CAN concluded by reaffirming its unwavering support and confidence in Governor Bala Mohammed, insisting that, in its conviction, the governor is neither aligned with terrorists nor involved in the financing of terrorism
