Baseless and Dangerous’: Bauchi Islamic Scholars Defend Governor, Denounce Terrorism Financing Allegations

Call for Immediate Release of Bauchi Finance Commissioner, Others

From Paul Orude Bauchi

Islamic scholars and leaders in Bauchi State have strongly rejected allegations linking the state government and its officials to terrorism financing, describing the claims as false, misleading, and capable of undermining the peace the state has enjoyed for years.

In a press conference on Friday, the text read by Imam Abubakar Mohammed lbrahim in Hausa and Imam Mohammad Yusuf Adams in English respectively, the scholars, representing 15  Islamic groups across the state, said they were compelled to speak out in defence of truth, justice, and public peace, in line with Islamic teachings.

They noted that Bauchi State remains one of the most peaceful states in Northern Nigeria, recording low levels of criminal activity and attracting people from neighbouring states who have relocated due to insecurity elsewhere.

According to them, the steady influx of residents and the establishment of new settlements such as Maraban Liman Katagum, New Nabordo, and New Narabi contradict claims that Bauchi harbours terrorists or bandits.

The scholars stated unequivocally that no town or forest in Bauchi State serves as a bandit or terrorist stronghold, nor has any group overpowered security agencies or operated under government protection.

They added that no arrests have ever been made in the state involving weapons or food supplies meant for bandits.

They praised the proactive security efforts of Governor Bala Mohammed, citing his provision of equipment, vehicles, and financial support to security agencies and vigilante groups, as well as his swift response to security threats, including incidents in Duguri, Alkaleri Local Government Area.

The scholars also highlighted the governor’s directive to Imams and clerics to offer special prayers for peace as evidence of his commitment to stability.

Addressing allegations involving Bello Badejo, the scholars clarified that his relationship with the governor was strictly based on cooperation on security matters and had no connection to banditry.

The Islamic leaders described the arrest and prosecution of the Commissioner of Finance and five other Bauchi State officials as shocking and unfounded, stressing that those affected are widely known for their integrity and peaceful conduct.

They called for their immediate release to allow them return to their families and continue serving the state.

The scholars warned against the spread of unverified stories, urging the public and political actors to avoid exploiting security issues for political rivalry. They cautioned that such actions could destabilize the state and harm innocent people.

In conclusion, the scholars asserted that the people of Bauchi State are best positioned to judge the actions of their governor, having experienced his leadership firsthand.

They prayed for sustained peace in the state, justice for those detained, and divine guidance for the governor in his efforts to develop Bauchi State.
