Governor Bala Mohammed’s recent traditional institution reforms in Bauchi State have begun to take effect with the appointment of his elder brother, Alhaji Adamu Mohammed, as the first Emir of the newly created Duguri Emirate.

The appointment, which was formally conveyed through a letter presented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Aminu Hammayo, marks a significant milestone in the implementation of the governor’s decision to expand the state’s traditional structure for inclusivity, unity, and local development.

At the presentation ceremony in Duguri, Hammayo urged the new Emir to use his position to advance peace, education, and social progress in line with the government’s development agenda.

In his response, the Emir, a retired Assistant Controller of Customs and current chairman of the Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board (BASUBEB), pledged to uphold the trust reposed in him.

Mohammed promised to prioritise education, security, and healthcare while working closely with other traditional leaders to ensure harmony and sustainable development across Bauchi State.

He also conferred the traditional title of Yariman Duguri as a mark of appreciation, praying for continued peace and prosperity in the emirate.

The Duguri Emirate is one of 13 new emirates and chiefdoms recently created by Governor Bala Mohammed after signing a landmark bill on October 21, 2025.

The reform, according to the governor, aims to correct historical imbalances, recognise cultural identities, and strengthen the role of traditional institutions as partners in governance and grassroots development.

Governor Mohammed emphasised that the creation of the new emirates was driven by policy and development goals, not politics, describing it as “a necessary reform to enhance inclusivity, revenue generation, and effective local governance.”

The emergence of the new Emir of Duguri symbolises the beginning of a new chapter in Bauchi’s traditional system—one that blends heritage with modern governance aspirations.
