SAZU: A Cosmopolitan Hub for National Unity and Cultural Preservation -VC

The Vice Chancellor of Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU), Professor Fatimah Tahir, has hailed the institution as a “cosmopolitan university” that reflects Nigeria’s ethnic diversity and serves as a model for national unity.

Professor Tahir made this declaration during the maiden edition of the university’s Cultural Festival and Exhibition (SAZUCEF 2025), held at the university’s main campus in Gadau, Bauchi State.

The vibrant celebration, organised by the Centre for Languages and Culture Studies, featured cultural displays, traditional music, dance, food, and fashion from more than 17 ethnic groups represented among the SAZU student body.

“SAZU is a cosmopolitan university. We accommodate people from every part of Nigeria,” Professor Tahir stated.

 “Today is the most exciting day of my life in this university. I’m overwhelmed with joy seeing our students united in peace, celebration, and cultural pride.”

Held under the theme “Celebrating Cultural Diversity for Unity and Harmonious Co-existence,” the festival underscored the university’s commitment to fostering intercultural understanding and peaceful coexistence.

Dressed in traditional attire and visibly elated, Professor Tahir joined students on the dance floor and sampled a variety of indigenous dishes prepared by different ethnic groups. She emphasized that beyond entertainment, such events offer a meaningful platform for cross-cultural education and the preservation of Nigeria’s heritage.

“This exhibition is vital,” she said. “It helps our students understand the people they live and study with. It promotes respect, preserves our traditions, and passes them on to future generations.”

The Vice Chancellor advocated for the institutionalization of the cultural festival as an annual university-wide event, rather than individual cultural days held by separate ethnic groups.

“Rather than celebrating in isolation, let us come together under one umbrella,” she urged. “That’s how we build unity, mutual respect, and a stronger sense of community.”

She further assured continued institutional support to ensure the festival remains a lasting tradition at SAZU.

Also present at the event was the Emir of Katagum, His Royal Highness Dr. Umar Farouq II, who was represented by Engineer Magaji Dahuwa Abdulkadir. The Emir commended the university for promoting inclusivity, unity, and peaceful coexistence.

“This is a brilliant initiative that will not only strengthen bonds among students but also contribute to lasting peace in the state and across the nation,” he said.

Director of the Centre for Languages and Culture Studies, Dr. Ahmad Tanimu Jibril, described the festival as a milestone in SAZU’s growth and a reflection of its diverse community.

“Our goal is to deepen the students’ understanding of Nigeria’s rich cultural landscape and to foster a stronger sense of belonging among them,” he noted. “SAZU has truly come of age—it is now home to students from every part of Nigeria.”

Cultural performances from Hausa, Fulani, Kanuri, Igbo, Yoruba, Shuwa Arab, Tiv, Idoma, Sayawa, Jarawa, and other ethnic communities lit up the festival, with each group showcasing its unique traditions, languages, and artistry.

As SAZU continues to grow in diversity and academic stature, the SAZUCEF festival stands as a vibrant symbol of the university’s vision—using education and culture as instruments of unity in a diverse nation.
