The Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the media, assuring journalists of adequate protection, particularly during the 2027 general elections.
The Commissioner gave the assurance when he received the newly elected Executive Committee of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi State Council, during a courtesy and familiarisation visit to his office.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, CP Aliyu commended the Chapel for its professionalism and support to the Police Command through crime reportage and public enlightenment.
The CP described the visit as a strategic engagement with influential media representatives in the state.
He urged journalists to combat the spread of fake news by prioritising verified information and responsible reporting, stressing that credible journalism and effective collaboration between the Police and the media were essential to maintaining peace and security.
The CP also assured the journalists that the Command would continue to provide a safe environment for media practitioners to discharge their constitutional responsibilities without fear or intimidation.
He emphasised that the Police would sustain its open-door policy and collaboration with the media, noting that the press plays an indispensable role in effective policing, public awareness and community safety.
Aliyu further urged the new Chapel leadership to promote factual, balanced and development-oriented journalism, while providing timely and credible information to support security efforts across the state.
Earlier, the newly elected Chapel Chairman, Comrade Ra’uf Oyewole, said the visit was to formally introduce the new executive, which emerged from an election held in October 2026 to serve a three-year tenure in accordance with the NUJ Constitution.
Oyewole explained that the Correspondents’ Chapel comprises professional journalists representing various national and international media organisations operating in Bauchi State.
He said the Chapel remained committed to press freedom, professional ethics, democracy, accountability and good governance.
According to him, the visit was also intended to strengthen the existing cordial relationship between the Police and the media and explore areas of collaboration in promoting peace, development, transparency and accountability, especially as the state prepares for the 2027 general elections.
