Group Tackles Kebbi ADC Over Alleged Persecution Of Opposition
Sani Adamu
A socio-political group in Kebbi State known as Kebbi Progressives Youth has dismissed the claims by the state chapter of the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) that the state governor is using the executive council and judiciary to witch-hunt members of the opposition as unfounded allegation.
Addressing a press conference at the ADC State Secretariat in Birnin Kebbi, the party alleged maltreatment of opposition figures by the Kebbi State Government.
The ADC claimed that the executive, judiciary and some government agencies were being used to “witch-hunt” the opposition.
The party said its state chairman and some members who criticised the government on social media were arrested by the police on orders of a state magistrate court with some detained for over two months.
Reacting to the allegation in a press release, the Kebbi Progressive Youth, faulted the opposition’s claims.
Spokesman of the group, Hamisu Sani said Governor Nasir Idris “has no hand” in the matter, insisting it was within the authority of the police and courts to prosecute offenders.
“Being in opposition does not give anybody immunity against the law, just as members of the ruling party are not exempted from the law,” Sani said.
He advised affected persons to resolve their issues with the police and courts or reconcile with their petitioners, rather than blame the governor.
Sani described Governor Idris as “a true democrat,” adding that there was no evidence of persecution of opposition figures.
The group also commended the governor for his developmental projects and humanitarian programmes across the state, urging the opposition not to distract him.
