NANS Warns Lawmakers Over Misuse Of Constituency Funds In Institutions

By Najib Sani, Gombe
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a warning to lawmakers in the North East zone over the alleged misuse of constituency project funds in academic institutions.
Speaking at a press conference, NANS Zone E Coordinator, Comrade Muazu Hina, condemned the practice, stating that lawmakers “allegedly channel constituency project funds into tertiary institutions without transparency, consultation, or measurable impact, turning schools into tools for political propaganda rather than centres of learning.”
“NANS will no longer tolerate the exploitation of struggling academic institutions for personal image laundering, stressing that funds meant for development are being diverted into poorly executed, abandoned, or non-existent projects,” Hina said.
According to him, the association plans to document cases, name and shame culprits, petition anti-corruption agencies, and mobilise mass action against errant lawmakers.
“NANS is actively documenting cases where academic institutions are used as cover for constituency projects, and the association is prepared to name and shame, petition relevant anti-corruption agencies, and mobilise lawful mass action against any lawmaker found culpable,” Hina warned.
The NANS coordinator emphasised that institutions of learning are not “dumping grounds for unaccountable projects,” and any attempt to impose projects without due process or student benefit will be resisted.
“This should serve as a formal notice to all elected representatives that Nigerian students are watching,” he concluded.
