The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), Northeast Zonal Centre, under the Office of the National Security Adviser to President Bola Tinubu has warned the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) against the use of illicit small arms and light weapons during the forthcoming Northeast NANS convention and elections.
Maj-:Gen Abubakar Adamu (Rtd), the Northeast Zonal Director of NCCSALW, gave the warning in Maiduguri on Thursday when the Northeast NANS delegation led by Comrade Sulaiman Sarki, the NANS Chairman in the region paid him a courtesy visit.
According to him, the Centre had been mandated by the Federal Government to arrest and prosecute any individual involved in the proliferation of illicit weapons in the country, adding that the centre has been seeking for more support and collaboration from all stakeholders in the Northeast.
“Collaboration with all the stakeholders will go a long way in curtailing the menace of the proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons in the country, thereby reducing the level of terrorism and banditry.
“We appreciate your visit and we will do everything possible to support and work in collaboration with you to ensure a society free of the proliferation of small arms and light weapons,” he said.
The Director who urged them not to engage themselves in using arms during and after elections, also advised them to continue to maintain peaceful coexistence with one another and be good ambassadors and leaders of tomorrow.
He also assured them that during the convention, the Northeast Zonal Centre would be there to deliver a lecture on the dangers of the proliferation of illicit arms and light weapons, ensure free and fair elections and also see how to support them in their endeavors.
Earlier, the NANS Chairman solicited for the support of NCCSALW and assured to be vigilant and careful in its convention slated for the end of January.
He promised not to let anyone get involved in using small arms and promised to report anything related to the use of small arms and light weapons.
The delegate commended the Zonal Director for his commitments to peace in all his career and made him a permanent member of the Association.
