Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, has paid glowing tribute to former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad (retd.), describing his death as the end of an era in Nigeria’s judicial history.

Justice Tanko Muhammad, a native of Bauchi State, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 71 in a hospital in Saudi Arabia after a prolonged illness.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, the governor said the late jurist’s passing had created a deep void in the nation’s legal system, noting that his life was defined by discipline, integrity, and selfless service to justice.

Governor Mohammed said Justice Tanko Muhammad’s journey through the judiciary from the High Court to the Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court, and eventually the office of Chief Justice of Nigeria between 2019 and 2022, reflected uncommon dedication and professional excellence.

According to him, the former CJN played a critical role in strengthening the independence of the judiciary and upholding the sanctity of the rule of law during his years of service, earning the respect of colleagues and the admiration of the public.

The governor noted that the national honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) bestowed on the late jurist was a clear recognition of his immense contributions to national development and judicial stability.

He described Justice Tanko Muhammad as a source of pride to Bauchi State and an inspiration to young legal practitioners across the country.

Governor Mohammed extended his sympathies to the bereaved family, the Nigerian Bar and Bench, and all Nigerians mourning the loss, praying for divine mercy and eternal rest for the departed soul.

He urged Nigerians to uphold the values of fairness, integrity, and commitment to justice which, he said, defined the life and career of the late former Chief Justice.

“Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad lived a life of honour and service. His legacy will continue to guide the judiciary and inspire generations yet unborn,” the governor said.
