By Paul Orude, Bauchi
A seven-year-old girl, Rukayya Muhammad, has lost her eyesight permanently after her teenage brother, Auwalu Muhammad, allegedly plucked out both her eyes in a suspected ritual attempt to acquire wealth.
The shocking incident occurred in Wailo town, Ganjuwa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, said the victim’s father, Muhammad Adamu, of Bayan Dutse Village, Wailo, reported the case to the Soro Divisional Police Headquarters on October 17, 2025.
According to him, the distraught father stated that his son lured his younger sister into a nearby bush, attacked her, and plucked out her eyes.
The victim was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, for emergency treatment, where a medical specialist confirmed that she would never regain her sight.
Following the report, detectives led by CSP Aliyu Mohammad Goni, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Soro Division, swiftly moved to the scene and arrested the suspect.
Wakil disclosed that six other suspects were later apprehended in connection with the crime. They include Auwalu Dahiru (17), Mohammed Rabiu (19), Saleh Ibrahim (20), Nasiru Muhammad, Hassan Garba, and Garba Dahiru (43).
“During interrogation, the suspects voluntarily confessed to the crime,” Wakil said, adding that investigations were ongoing to determine the full motive behind the heinous act and to ensure all those involved were brought to justice.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a discreet and professional investigation.
He reaffirmed the Command’s resolve to fight ritual-related crimes and warned that perpetrators of such barbaric acts would face the full weight of the law.
