Senator Shehu Buba, HCDI Restore Water to Unity Estate
From Beatrice Gondyi, Bauchi
After years of water scarcity, residents of Unity Estate in Bauchi metropolis are now enjoying steady access to clean water, thanks to the intervention of Senator Shehu Buba, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, facilitated by the Halaty Community Development Initiative (HCDI).
For several years, the estate’s main borehole remained broken down, forcing households to depend on costly water vendors and unsafe alternatives, a challenge that threatened health, hygiene, and children’s welfare. Concerned about the worsening situation, HCDI mobilized residents and drew the attention of Senator Buba to their plight.
Responding swiftly, the senator directed the immediate repair of the borehole system. Engineers were deployed, and the water facility was fully reactivated, restoring a steady supply to households across the estate.
Speaking to journalists, the Secretary of Unity Estate Residents Association, Mr. Temidayo, described the intervention as a major relief:
“Water is life, and without it, life in this estate had become extremely difficult. Many of us struggled daily to provide water for our families. With this intervention, things have improved, and we are deeply grateful.”
Women, who bore the brunt of the water shortage, also expressed joy.
Hajiya Rashida Yusuf, a resident, said:
“Before now, I woke up before dawn to fetch water or buy from vendors at high costs. With water restored, life has become easier for our families. We are grateful to those who made this possible.”
Another resident, Mrs. Gladys Michael, added:
“It was the women who suffered most. We had to wake early, walk long distances, and still spend money we didn’t have. With this water restored, our lives are easier, and our children are healthier.”
Development experts note that the restoration of water in Unity Estate reflects progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which calls for universal access to safe and affordable drinking water. The initiative also advances SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 1 (No Poverty) by easing financial burdens and ensuring better hygiene for famil
