ASUU Warns of Nationwide Strike Over Unresolved Demands, Salary Delays

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike if the federal government fails to address its long-standing demands, including the conclusion of the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement.

In a statement signed by its president, Christopher Piwuna, ASUU accused the government of neglecting agreements and creating conditions that have left lecturers “forgotten, shamed, and demoralised.” The union also directed members to suspend work whenever salaries are delayed, insisting on a “no pay, no work” policy following unpaid June salaries.

Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, however, assured that the government has put measures in place to prevent strikes in tertiary institutions, claiming that union demands are already being addressed.

Reacting, ASUU said industrial harmony depends on the government acting on unresolved issues. The union cited unfulfilled Memoranda of Understanding and Action signed in 2013, 2017, 2019, and 2020, and an eight-year delay in concluding the renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement. The latest committee, led by Yayale Ahmed, submitted its report eight months ago, but the government has yet to sign or implement it.

ASUU also criticised poor working conditions, citing unpaid entitlements, inadequate research facilities, and lack of teaching resources. “Lecturers teach on empty stomachs, conduct research without essential materials, and struggle to meet family needs while being blamed for producing unemployable graduates,” the statement said.

The union further condemned the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) as “corruption-laden” and accused the government of withholding salaries and promotion benefits from lecturers who opted out.

If the government fails to act, ASUU warns, another nationwide strike may be inevitable.
