The National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Bauchii State chapter, has

commended the State government for introducing policies and programmes aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of women in both rural and urban communities across the state.

Chairperson of NAWOJ in Bauchi State, Rashida Yusuf, gave the commendation in  a press release on the occasion of the celebration of the international women’s day

in recognition of women and girls championing the advancement of transformative digital technology.

“This year’s theme, DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality, highlights the role of innovative technology in promoting gender equality and meeting the health and developmental needs of women and girls,” she said.

Globally, the increasing number and use of mobile phones and internet connectivity have facilitated access to health information and services, she added.

Yusuf said the adoption of digital health and other technological innovations has positively impacted electronic medical records, health data management, security, and effective communication between health workers, patients, and community stakeholders.

“With support, women in Bauchi State can be innovators and contribute to transforming the health of all people in the state,” she said.

“I am glad to see the enthusiastic scale-up of ICT-based innovation deployed to fight COVID-19 and other diseases in the region.

“In the area of reproductive health, we hereby urge families across Bauchi State to prevent maternal mortality that has become frequent in some communities due to failure to attend hospitals during pregnancy.

“We must therefore do everything humanly possible to end this menace mainly impacting vulnerable women and girls, especially those in rural and remote areas with low education and socioeconomic status.

The NAWOJ said in order to address the challenges facing women, there is need for creation of awareness about the digital gender divide.

She also called for advocacy for policies and legal frameworks to keep women and girls safe as well as promoting women’s participation in science, technology, and ICTs.

“Let us also work to ensure that women and girls are safe,”she urged

“As we celebrate International Women’s Day, I urge all stakeholders, the state government, partners, civil society and citizens—to support the gender-sensitive approaches of this association to close the existing gender divide especially on health and education”
