Climate change: Sasakawa Africa advises farmers to use organic fertiliser
From Sani Adamu, Gombe
As part of measures to cope with climate change as it affects farming, an agricultural development organisation known as ‘Sasakwa Association Africa’ has advised farmers on the use of organic fertiliser and avoiding the use of chemical sprays to improve the soil.
Country Director of the association, Dr Abdulhamid Gambo gave the advice in an interview with journalists at the end of his assessment tour of communities trained by his organisation on new farming techniques in Gombe State.
Gambo said their focus has now shifted to educating farmers on how to mitigate climate change which is devastating.
“In order to address this, we focused on crop rotation, minimum tillage, using organic manure as against inorganic manure and reduce the use of chemicals spray to improve the soil ,” he said.
Gambo said in the area of market oriented agriculture, what they were promoting is farming as a business not just to farm to eat.
According to him, within the period of their working in Gombe, they have worked on several strategic areas to support farmers in various communities on agricultural best practices.
He said the idea was aimed at improving the nutritional status of small holder farmers at rural areas by supporting the cultivation and marketing of nutritious crops thereby reducing malnutrition.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture Gombe State, Dr Danladi Molta, thanked the association for the visit and interventions in Gombe State which he said have impacted positively in lives of the people of the state.
Molta reiterated the commitment of Gombe government in partnering with Development partners for the betterment of Gombe citizens.
