Breaking: Tuggar Resigns as Foreign Affairs Minister Ahead of 2027 Bauchi Governorship Race

From Paul Orude Bauchi
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has stepped down from the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in what is widely seen as a strategic move ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi State.
Sources confirmed that Tuggar submitted his resignation around noon on Monday, in compliance with a presidential directive requiring political appointees with electoral ambitions to vacate office before the March 31, 2026 deadline.
Insiders say the former minister is preparing to contest the governorship on the platform of the All-Progressives Congress (APC).
“He has formally stepped down and is set to join the race for the Bauchi governorship in 2027,” a source disclosed.
Tuggar’s exit is expected to reshape the political landscape in the state, where interest in the governorship seat is already gathering momentum among several aspirants.
The development is part of a broader wave of anticipated resignations within the federal cabinet, following a directive conveyed through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
The directive mandates ministers, aides, and heads of government agencies seeking elective positions to resign on or before March 31, 2026, in line with provisions of the Electoral Act and the timetable issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2027 elections.
With the deadline fast approaching, more resignations are expected as political appointees reposition themselves for the next electoral cycle.
