The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi State Council, has strongly condemned the alleged assault on a staff member of Albarka Radio by police officers in Bununu, Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State during the Sallah celebration.

In a press release dated March 23, 2026, signed by the Council Secretary, Isah Garba Gadau, the Union described the incident as “barbaric and unacceptable,” stressing that it represents a serious violation of human rights and a direct attack on press freedom.

The Council expressed concern that such misconduct is being perpetrated by officers entrusted with the responsibility of protecting citizens, noting that the act undermines ongoing efforts by the Union to promote professionalism and accountability among security agencies.

The NUJ called on the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, to immediately launch a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that all officers involved are appropriately sanctioned.

It further demanded that the Bauchi State Police Command take full responsibility for the victim’s medical expenses without delay.

The Union warned that failure to meet its demands would compel it to convene an emergency congress to determine its next line of action.

The Council also urged media organizations across the state to remain vigilant and await further directives, reiterating its commitment to securing justice and ensuring the safety and dignity of journalists.

The NUJ emphasized that it will not tolerate any form of intimidation, harassment, or brutality against journalists under any circumstances.
