The Venezuela Solidarity Campaign in Nigeria has reaffirmed its unwavering support for the people and government of Venezuela, condemning US threats of military invasion and economic warfare against the country.

In a press statement issued to our correspondent on Tuesday, the group expressed total and unwavering solidarity with the people and government of Venezuela and called for the immediate release of President Nicolas Maduro and Cilia Flores, whom they say were “illegally abducted by Donald Trump’s regime”.

The group also rejected US threats to invade Greenland, Iran, Nigeria and other countries, stating that such actions are aimed at “stealing from their vast oil and other minerals”.

“We stand with the positions of the people in rejecting U.S imperialism. Any attempt to impose leadership on Venezuela from outside its borders constitutes a grave violation of international norms and sets a dangerous precedent for countries of the Global South,” the statement read.

The campaign urged Nigerians to join them in solidarity, calling for marches and mass actions to reject “imperialist aggression” and defend sovereignty and democratic rights.

“We urge the Nigerian people to remain alert, proactive and people-centered, strengthening pro-masses policies, national unity and social justice as the first line of defense against imperial aggression,” the statement added.

This is just as the group clarified that their video in circulation in recent days was solidarity walk to the Venezuela’s embassy last year and not recently as purported saying they have not staged fresh demonstration on the current events.

“The Venezuela Solidarity Campaign in Nigeria wishes to clarify recent misleading social media content and reaffirm our unwavering solidarity with the people and government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

‎”In the second week of November last year, our coalition paid a solidarity visit to the Embassy of Venezuela in Nigeria. This visit was a peaceful and principled diplomatic engagement aimed at opposing the threats of military invasion, regime-change operations, and economic warfare being orchestrated by the United States government against Venezuela.

“Our position then, as now, remains unequivocal: sovereign nations must not be invaded, destabilised, or coerced under any guise.

‎”As a coalition, we firmly believe in dialogue, diplomacy and respect for international law, not military occupation or imperial aggression”, they said.

The Venezuela Solidarity Campaign in Nigeria is a coalition of civil society organisations, trade unions, women and youth groups.
