….No Negligence, Only Compassion: FMC Misau CMD Responds to Petition Over Patient’s Death with Transparency and Empathy

By Umar Usman Duguri.

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Misau, Dr Rufai Dachi, highlighted the progress recorded in the Institution since its establishment.

Dachi predicted that the medical center is recording progress to match its peers in the county.

“In achieving its desired goals within the shortest span of time, President Bola Tinubu through the Minister of Heath and Social  Welfare, Professor Mohammed Ali Pate established  FMC Misau to meet  global standard,” he stated.

The CMD  spoke with Metoric Post while reacting to a petition written and widely circulated against the hospital and its services.

Dachi responded to the petition entitled: ‘The Demise of Mr. Salisu Abdullahi on 23rd July 2025,” by clarifying that on same Wednesday the deceased was brought to the Emergency Unit of the centre  at 8:05 am in a critical condition.

“His oxygen saturation was extremely low, and his blood pressure was nearly unrecordable,” the CMD stated.

“Our staff promptly admitted and resuscitated, and placed him on medications to calm the deteriorating condition, after an hour his vitals improved, his blood pressure become appreciable and oxygen levels were restored to optimal levels, though he remained unconscious.

“After medical evaluation by professionals, it was determined that the patient required intensive care support, a service not yet available at our center at the moment.

“We therefore, referred Salisu to the nearest teaching hospital, accompanied by an emergency nurse onboard the ambulance to monitor his condition en route to Azare Medical center.

“Unfortunately, approximately 19km from Misau local government, the patient’s condition suddenly deteriorated and he suffered a convulsion. Despite all efforts, he passed away before arrival at the referral centre.

“The medical diagnosis has been formally documented, but in respect of ethical standards and patient confidentiality, we are unable to disclose clinical details publicly”

The CMD further shared Progress in Patient Outcomes in the hospital.

“It is important to note that FMC Misau has recorded a significant reduction in mortality rate over the past year, a testament to the continuous efforts by our management and staff to improve emergency response and patient care outcomes,” he stated.

“We remain committed to doing even more”

On the information that went viral on social media regarding  the incident, Dachi acknowledged the pain and frustration expressed by some members of the public.

“However, we caution against the spread of unverified narratives that may misrepresent facts and undermine the hard work of our healthcare professionals,” he advised.

“There was no negligence, and the care rendered was in full accordance with clinical standards.

“We welcome constructive feedback, but urge all to be responsible in their communication, especially during moments of grief”

Asked on referral of patients and costs, Dachi disclosed  that FMC Misau emergency care was promptly provided without delay, in line with its standard practice.

“Any financial obligations were part of routine hospital procedures and did not interfere with the immediate medical attention given,” he added.

“Mmoreover our Commitment to Continuous Improvement, as a relatively new tertiary institution, FMC Misau remains fully committed to its core mandate of Service with Diligence.

“We continue to expand our infrastructure, train our workforce, and improve emergency service delivery to meet the needs of our growing patient population.

“However, to the family of the late Mr. Salisu, please accept our sincere sympathies. May God strengthen your hearts and grant you peace!.

“To the general public, FMC Misau remains your hospital, and we stand by our commitment to deliver car that is safe, professional, and compassionate. We appreciate your continued trust and support”

He highlighted the successes achieved by the centre since it’s inception and assured of continued quality services.

“We have successfully up taken medical center with medical care (out patients, in patients, A&E services, maternity and pediatrics services) and we also secured accreditation and admission of 1 set of Basic nursing and Basic Midwifery programs in in the newly established College of Nursing,” he revealed.

“We  have established and commenced Dialysis in the Federal Medical Center Misau, which are few in the country but the honorable Minister ensured the success to bring succor to Nigerians especially those coming from the rural areas and find it difficult to access or locate similar center in the needed time.

“Another Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) was established in the first few months of commencing clinical services in the FMC Misau.

“We also have ambulances and enough oxygen in the hospital to provide quick response in  case of emergency.

“Therefore, It is our mandate to stand and provide fair services to fellow citizens mindful of any difference or feelings, above all, visitors; that comprise in and out patients and students have fidelity treatment and services”
