The Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment, (AGILE) in Gombe State
has hosted a consultation meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in the state on improving disability inclusion in the project.

Speaking at the opening of the meeting on Thursday, the Gombe State coordinator of AGILE, Dr Amina Haruna Abdul, explained that the meeting aimed to gather inputs and recommendations from stakeholders on enhancing disability inclusion in AGILE’s projects, particularly in education and economic empowerment.

She pledged to put under consideration all the suggestions and calls made by the participants for inclusion in their workplans.

The AGILE coordinator lamented the rampant use of girls for farm labour in Gombe opining that it is one of the problems hindering girls education in the state.

During the session, the participants including persons with disabilities, emphasised the need for increased representation and participation of females with disabilities in AGILE’s initiatives.

They pointed out that female persons with disabilities face double discriminations, as “they are discriminated against for their physical impairments and many are also denied access to education”.

The participants urged AGILE to prioritise females with disabilities in their economic empowerment to enable them enrol in schools thereby enhancing education among the state’s residents.
