Bauchí Govt Condemns Sen. Shehu Buba over “baseless ” comments on Zaranda shooting

Bauchí State Government has condemned the statement of Chairman Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, Senator Shehu Buba (Bauchí South) on the recent shooting in his constituency of Zaranda in Toro Local Government Area of the state
Senator Buba had alleged that the September 10, 2024 shooting, which killed a charcoal seller and left two others fatally injured, was allegedly led by a militia group led by one Shayi, describing the incident as extra judicial killing
He made the allegation on Sunday while on a visit to sympathise with the victim’s family, condemning the shootings.
Sen Buba assured the bereaved family that he would go to any length to ensure that the deceased get justice to prevent further extra judicial killing in his constituency
However, the statement of the senator, which went viral in a video, did not go down well with the state government who condemned it as irresponsible.
The Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Abubakar Abdulhamid Bununu, said the senator’s comments were u dignifying if senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria .
Bununu condemned condemned a video statement made by Senator Buba alleging that personnel of the State Agency for Vigilante and Youth Empowerment were responsible for the recent killing in Zaranda village.
“His claim is baseless, inflammatory, divisive, and a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of the state government and its security agencies,” Bununu states.
“The senator’s reckless allegations are unacceptable and have the potential to compromise the state’s security, undermine the efforts of law enforcement agencies, and create unnecessary tension among the citizens”
The Commissioner emphasized that the state government takes the security and well-being of its citizens seriously and will not tolerate any individual or group spreading false information or making baseless allegations that threaten the peace and stability of the state.
“The Bauchi State Government is committed to ensuring justice and accountability for the Zaranda killing and has initiated a thorough investigation into the incident,” Bununu stated.
He urged the senator to retract his statement and tender unreserved apology to the people of Bauchi State for his irresponsible and misleading comments.
“The senator’s actions are a clear example of politicizing security issues, which is unacceptable and detrimental to the well-being of our citizens,” Abubakar Bununu stressed.
The commissioner also called on security agencies to invite Senator Shehu Buba for clarification on his statement, stressing that as a public figure, he should be objective and responsible in his utterances.
“The state government will continue to work tirelessly to maintain peace and stability in Bauchi State and will not be distracted by baseless allegations and misinformation,” Bununu said. .
