Real Madrid defeated defending champions Manchester City 4-3 on penalties at the Etihad Stadium to qualify for the Champions League semi-final.

The two sides had played 3-3 draw in the first leg in Madrid a week ago.

Penalty shootouts was needed to decide which team go into the semi-final which Madrid won.

Earlier, Madrid had opened the scoring 12 minutes into the game through Rodrygo. He tapped home from close range after the rebound fell into his path.

Seven minutes later, Erling Haaland latched on to a superb cross inside the box but only hit the crossbar with a fine header.

In the 27th minute, Kevin De Bruyne steadied himself and bent in a shot from the edge of the box towards the left side of the goal, but Andriy Lunin had it covered and made a comfortable save.

Jack Grealish, in the 36th minute went for goal and shot towards the left side of the goal, but his effort was well blocked.

In the 53rd minute, Andriy Lunin made a sensational save to thwart a great chance. A rebound fell to Phil Foden inside the box and he struck goalwards, but the ball ended up in the keeper’s gloves instead of the middle of the target.

In the 70th minute, Jack Grealish burst into the box after a fine solo run. He looked up and tried to place a shot into the bottom left corner, but Andriy Lunin made a great save to deny him his moment of glory.

City equalised in the 76th minute. Kevin De Bruyne was in the right place at the right time to get to the rebound inside the box and gleefully rifled the ball into the top of the net.
