Troost-Ekong excited to be back in the Super Eagles fold after more than three months of absence

Super Eagles defender, William Troost Ekong, has expressed his joy at rejoining the national team camp after more than three months of absence.

The PAOK defender is gearing up with the Eagles in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as they prepare for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), scheduled to commence on January 13.

Ekong joined 23 other players who are currently in camp, intensifying their preparations for the AFCON tournament set to take place in Ivory Coast.

Among the players present are Ahmed Musa, Kenneth Omeruo, Semi Ajayi, Ojo Olorunleke, Alex Iwobi, Ola Aina, Calvin Bassey, Ademola Lookman, Joe Aribo, Frank Onyeka, Bruno Onyemachi, Chidozie Awaziem, Zaidu Sanusi, Victor Boniface, Raphael Onyedika, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Staney Nwabili, Samuel Chukwueze, Francis Uzoho, Sadiq Umar, Vctor Osimhen, Moses Simon and Alhassan Yusuf.

Ekong’s return to camp follows his completion of the full duration in PAOK’s impressive 4-0 victory over OFI Crete FC in the Greek Super League on Wednesday, January 3.

Expressing his delight on his verified Twitter account, Ekong said, “Honoured to be back with the team for another AFCON. Let’s get to work!!!”

The 30-year-old defender, who boasts 64 caps for Nigeria, was last named in a Super Eagles gameday squad on September 10, 2023, in a commanding 6-0 victory over Sao Tome and Principe.

Since making his debut on June 13, 2015, and playing a full 90 minutes in an AFCON qualifying match against Chad, Ekong has scored four goals for the Super Eagles.

His return adds experience and depth to the squad as they gear up for the AFCON campaign.
