The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has commended the Bauchi State Government for its strong commitment to tackling challenges in child nutrition, education, and healthcare.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to Governor Bala Mohammed at the Government House, Bauchi, on Monday, the UNICEF Nigeria Country Representative, Wafaa Saeed Abdelatef, described Bauchi’s investments in child welfare as exemplary.

“What is happening in Bauchi State is not only an example for Nigeria but for the region and the globe,” Abdelatef said.

“Education is the key to the success of any community.

“Research shows that if girls complete secondary school, child marriage reduces, health improves, and society as a whole benefits.

“We deeply acknowledge your leadership and reaffirm our commitment to supporting Bauchi State so that children have the best start in life—through proper nutrition, healthcare, education, and protection.”

Abdelatef, who was in company with UNICEF Chief of Field Office, Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, and other personnel of the fund, further praised the state government’s contribution of over ₦200 million to child nutrition funds.

She noted that Governor Mohammed ‘s administration sets “a good example for the Global Fund” and strengthens collaborative efforts to improve child welfare.

In his response, Governor Bala Mohammed thanked UNICEF for its consistent partnership, financial support, and technical assistance in addressing challenges facing children in Bauchi.

Governor Mohammed particularly lauded UNICEF’s role in establishing an oxygen plant and a Baby Care Unit at the General Hospital, Azare, as well as its support for renovating primary healthcare centers across the state.

He also highlighted community-led initiatives such as Fathers for Good Health (F4H), Mama2Mama Support Groups, and WASHCOMs (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Committees), which promote child health, nutrition, and hygiene.

Governor Mohammed reiterated his administration’s commitment to devote resources to health and education.

He pledged to sustain collaboration with UNICEF to further improve child and maternal health in the state.
