Tinubu Rewards D’Tigress with $100,000 Each, National Honours, after AfroBasket Victory

President Bola Tinubu has rewarded Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, with $100,000 each, national honours of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), and three-bedroom flats at the Renewed Hope Estate.
Members of the coaching and technical team each received $50,000, flats, and OON awards.
The gesture follows D’Tigress’ fifth consecutive and seventh overall FIBA Women’s AfroBasket championship win after defeating Mali 78–64 in the final in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
This win also secured Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup and extended their AfroBasket unbeaten run to 29 games.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who hosted the team on behalf of the President at the State House, praised the players for their resilience, unity, and excellence.
Shettina hailed Coach Rena Wakama’s leadership and celebrated stars like Amy Okonkwo (MVP) and Ezinne Kalu (top scorer).
First Lady Oluremi Tinubu also commended the team’s determination and inspiration to young girls nationwide.
National Sports Commission Chairman, Shehu Dikko, lauded the team’s historic achievement and affirmed government commitment to sports development.
Dikko expressed hope that D’Tigers will emulate the women’s team at the upcoming AfroBasket Championship in Angola.
