Foundation Meets With Stakeholders On Erosion Control Project In Gombe

A non governmental organisation in Gombe State, ‘Foundation for Youth Awakening and Empowerment’ (FOYAE) has met with stakeholders in Gombe State ahead of launching of its project to combat erosion and water shortage in Kundulum, Akko local government area of Gombe State.
During the meeting, the executive director of the foundation, Linda Alabura, explained that the project supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEFSGP), aims to mitigate the impact of environmental degradation in the community.
She stated that the project would involve drilling water boreholes, building stone walls, and planting trees to control erosion in the area.
The meeting according to her engaged stakeholders, including the state Ministry of Environment, ACRESAL, Akko Local Government Council, State House of Assembly, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), and academics.
“The stakeholders’ involvement is crucial in ensuring the project’s success. A community environmental protection committee selected from the community would be trained on project implementation. The committee would work closely with us to ensure the project’s sustainability”, she said.
Also speaking, the programme officer of the foundation, Liskebe Ishaku, noted that academics would be involved in research, while NGOs and CSOs were engaged to endorse the project.
She said project launch marks a significant step towards addressing environmental challenges in Kundulum.
Secretary of the Gombe State House of Assembly Committee on Water Resources and Environment, Aminu Aliyu, representing the house, expressed the Assembly’s support for the project.
He also revealed plans to amend the state’s forestry law to better protect the environment.
